5 Safest Cities in the US

Written by on June 13th, 2012 | 0 Comments »

A lot of the time, the United States of America gets a bad rap for being a violent nation. Now, sometimes the critics may be right- we do have a lot of guns, a lot of murders per capita, the largest prison population in the world and many costly wars- but, that is only part of the picture. In fact, most people would agree that for the most part, they feel pretty darn safe in America. It is a complicated country, but at the same time, it is a very beautiful country with a lot to offer anyone who is lucky enough to walk on its land. All across this country are safe cities that live in peace and serenity for the most part- where people are truly living the American Dream.

1. Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota

These two cities are commonly known as the “twin cities,” but these are no warring siblings, these ones actually get along quite well. These two cities have been near the top of the safest cities in the United States list for the better part of two decades now, and they topped the list of America’s Safest Cities this year, according to Forbes Magazine. Minneapolis and St. Paul ranked the lowest in workplace fatalities, very low in murder and crime rates and very low in traffic accidents and risk for a natural disaster of some kind. The Forbes list is very extensive, as it does not just measure crime, but all danger factors in city life.

2. Milwaukee, Wisconsin

In many ways, Milwaukee is just like Minneapolis and St. Paul. It is located in a place that is perpetually cold and kind of isolated from the rest of the country. Milwaukee rated the lowest in natural disaster risk, which it pretty much does not have. But, Milwaukee did not fare so well in their ratings for violent crime, which was much higher than Minneapolis and St. Paul’s metropolitan area.

3. Portland, Oregon

Portland is a beacon for nightlife, the young, the peaceful and the creative. It is no wonder that Portland is near the top of the list every single year that Forbes does it. If you have ever been to Portland, then you are probably more than aware of the laid-back vibe it has for a small, but bustling city. Portland rated the lowest in violent crime.

4. Boston, Massachusetts

Boston may be surprising to people who are only familiar with the area through mob movies and stuff like that. In reality, Boston is a very safe city, and easily the safest large city on the Eastern seaboard. Boston rated the lowest in traffic related accidents and deaths out of all the cities, but rated pretty high in natural disaster risk.

5. Seattle, Washington

Seattle is world famous for being the home to many serial killers, but that is a fluke.Seattle actually ranks very low in every category, except natural disaster risk due to being near an active fault line, on the ocean and near an active volcano.
